A Rogers, AR woman was able to evade an attack at a Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market located on 8th street January 21st. Cortney Payne from Clarksville, AR now living in Rogers, needed to make a trip to the store. While not being a fan of late night store runs like most of us, this trip couldn’t be avoided. Cortney says she was in the baby aisle when she saw a man watching her from underneath a hat pulled low over his eyes. Heading quickly back to the front of the store with her items Cortney felt a tap on her shoulder and turned around to see the same man that had been watching her. He had a credit card in his hand and explained that a belt on his car was broken and he would pay for all her items for $16 return in cash so he could buy the car part. Cortney had to tell him multiple times that she didn’t carry cash on her before he proceeded to call her names and accusing her of lying while he walked away very angered. Very shaken up Cortney quickly paid for her items but felt uneasy because the man had disappeared. Cortney approached a man filling up a vending machine by the registers and asked him to walk her out. Very politely and carrying her things, he did. The parking lot was vacant and Cortney had parked right in front, approaching her car they noticed sitting on the hood of the car next to hers was the man that had asked her for money, and with another male inside the car. When they saw her with the Coke man walking her out he quickly got in his car and they drove off. (The car that he had previously said was broken.)
Cortney has contacted and reported this to authorities and who needed to be involved but most importantly Cortney wants women everywhere to have their guard up. She is urging women to always be aware of their surroundings. Cortney is thankful for the Coke man, and very thankful that she had the forethought to ask him to walk her out.
Authorities and Wal-Mart have actively been working together to locate the suspects in question and it is wonderful we have local community businesses that have employees that will go above and beyond.
