Why train in martial arts?
In martial arts, we often teach concepts of self-discipline, self-control, how to increase confidence, and how to be humble. It is so easy to be focused on what we are practicing that we can forget how important martial arts training can be to a student.
Students train in martial arts for many different reasons. Some start training so that they can learn self-defense. Some train to get in better shape both physically and mentally. Some students train because they miss being part of a team. Most people start training for a specific purpose, but most students motivation will change as they mature as a martial artist. For example, I had a student that was physically and mentally bullied through high school. He started his martial arts training because he felt an urgency to learn self-defense. After a few years of training, I had a conversation with this student about his goals in martial arts. Not once did he mention being bullied was a reason for him to continue training. His motivation had changed. He was now focused on his next competition. I asked him if he remembered why he started training in martial arts. He instantly remembered about the abuse that he endured while he was in high school. I asked him what changed his focus. He couldn’t even remember! He didn’t want to even think about that time in his life because it was painful and brought up so many terrible memories. This student started training out of fear, but he let go of that burden. Now he felt so empowered, that he wanted to know what he could do to start helping other students that were going through the same thing as he did prior to finding martial arts. This student is now a black belt, and has dedicated his life to helping both kids and adults to become confident and skilled martial arts athletes.
I have always been passionate about helping students to build confidence and to be humble citizens and students. To this day, this is what drives me to do everything that I can to help people in all walks of life.
At some point, I believe that we all have a responsibility to help guide students that are trying to overcome obstacles in their lives. I have found support in some unlikely places throughout the years and I believe that everything comes full circle.
Putting people’s needs ahead of our own can be a reward unto itself. And seeing people succeed in times of difficulty will give a teacher a tremendous sense of accomplishment.
Sometimes students have a strong calling to teach. If you feel moved towards helping shape the lives of others, be confident! The first step is the most difficult. After you decide that teaching martial arts to others sounds amazing, reach out to your instructor. Let them know that you are interested and then your new journey can begin!
